Reptiles are the least studied vertebrates regarding the impact of pesticides on their health, despite being good models for ecotoxicological studies given their abundance and easy handling. Salvator merianae is widely distributed in South America and often found in agricultural cultivation areas. Here, we compared the morphological, biochemical, and physiological parameters of S. merianae from an exposed area (EA) to pesticides and a reference area (RA) or control. These parameters were measured in plasma (albumin, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, glucose, total proteins, uric acid, triglycerides, VLDL, and corticosterone) and in erythrocytes (TBARS, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activity). Blood samples were collected from 28 lizards (EA: three juveniles, three adult females, and three adult males; RA: nine juveniles, four females, and five males) in southern Brazil during the reproductive period. We observed a decrease in body mass, the ratio between body mass and total length and snout-vent length in juvenile lizards collected at EA. The levels of TBARS, glutathione S-transferase, triglycerides, VLDL, and uric acid were altered for juveniles in EA. When comparing the two areas, females differed in superoxide dismutase activity and total proteins, while males differed in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase activity. This set of results shows that S. merianae, especially juveniles, suffers a negative impact when inserted in an agricultural area. The analyzed biomarkers proved suitable for monitoring these lizards and the quality of this environment.

Stressed soft materials commonly present viscoelastic signatures in the form of power-law or exponential decay. Although exponential responses are the most common, power-law time dependencies arise peculiarly in complex soft materials such as living cells. Understanding the microscale mechanisms that drive rheologic behaviors at the macroscale shall be transformative in fields such as material design and bioengineering. Using an elastic network model of macromolecules immersed in a viscous fluid, we numerically reproduce those characteristic viscoelastic relaxations and show how the microscopic interactions determine the rheologic response. The macromolecules, represented by particles in the network, interact with neighbors through a spring constant k and with fluid through a non-linear drag regime. The dissipative force is given by γvα, where v is the particle's velocity, and γ and α are mesoscopic parameters. Physically, the sublinear regime of the drag forces is related to micro-deformations of the macromolecules, while α ≥ 1 represents rigid cases. We obtain exponential or power-law relaxations or a transitional behavior between them by changing k, γ, and α. We find that exponential decays are indeed the most common behavior. However, power laws may arise when forces between the macromolecules and the fluid are sublinear. Our findings show that in materials not too soft not too elastic, the rheological responses are entirely controlled by α in the sublinear regime. More specifically, power-law responses arise for 0.3 ⪅ α ⪅ 0.45, while exponential responses for small and large values of α, namely, 0.0 ⪅ α ⪅ 0.2 and 0.55 ⪅ α ⪅ 1.0.

BACKGROUND: The impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy has been analyzed suggesting an increased risk of placental lesions that might lead to maternal and neonatal complications. However, the current published evidence is not conclusive because contradictory results. METHODS: PLAXAVID is an observational, retrospective, histopathological, single-center study that aimed to evaluate the prevalence of vascular and inflammatory lesions in placental and umbilical cord samples of one hundred women infected by SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy. RESULTS: The histopathological analysis showed that in most of the placentas (77.8%) there were signs of maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM; primary endpoint). The most common MVM features were an accelerated villous maturation (37.4%), central villous infarcts (33.3%), and villous agglutination (46.5%). Fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM) was identified in 57.6% of samples, and the most frequent features were hyalinized avascular villi (38.4%), fetal vascular thrombi (20.2%) and umbilical cord at risk of partial obstruction (14.1%). Acute and chronic inflammatory pathology were noticed in 22.2% and 49.5% of placentas, respectively. No significant correlations were found between MVM presence and the time, duration, and severity of infection, nor with the duration of pregnancy. However, in critically ill patients, the pregnancy duration (p=0.008), newborn weight (p=0.003), and APGAR test scores (p<0.001) were significantly lower. The same trend was observed considering the presence of infection at the time of delivery and in preterm births. CONCLUSION: A very high percentage of placentas with vascular and/or inflammatory lesions was found in the analyzed cohort. Therefore, PLAXAVID study results supported that COVID-19 should be considered a risk factor during gestation and requires close monitoring of pregnancy.

Abstract Under salt stress conditions, plant growth is reduced due to osmotic, nutritional and oxidative imbalance. However, salicylic acid acts in the mitigation of this abiotic stress by promoting an increase in growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, synthesis of osmoregulators and antioxidant enzymes. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid doses on the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the treatments were distributed in randomized blocks using a central composite matrix Box with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (CEw) (0.50; 1.08; 2.50; 3.92 and 4.50 dS m-1), associated with five doses of salicylic acid (SA) (0.00; 0.22; 0.75; 1.28 and 1.50 mM), with four repetitions and each plot composed of three plants. At 40 days after sowing, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, electrolyte leakage, relative water content, and total dry mass were determined. ECw and SA application influenced the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings. Increasing the ECw reduced growth in the absence of SA. Membrane damage with the use of SA remained stable up to 3.9 dS m-1 of ECw. The relative water content independent of the CEw increased with 1.0 mM of SA. The use of SA at the concentration of 1.0 mM mitigated the deleterious effect of salinity on seedling growth up to 2.50 dS m-1 of ECw.

Contudo, o ácido salicílico atua na mitigação desse estresse abiótico por promover incremento no crescimento, fotossíntese, metabolismo do nitrogênio, síntese de osmorreguladores e enzimas antioxidantes. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de doses de ácido salicílico sobre o crescimento e alterações fisiológicas de mudas de berinjela sob estresse salino. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, onde os tratamentos foram distribuídos em blocos ao acaso utilizando uma matriz composta central Box com cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa) (0,50; 1,08; 2,50; 3,92 e 4,50 dS m-1), associada a cinco doses de ácido salicílico (AS) (0,00; 0,22; 0,75; 1,28 e 1,50 mM), com quatro repetições e cada parcela composta por três plantas. Aos 40 dias após a semeadura, foram determinados a altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, número de folhas, área foliar, vazamento de eletrólito, teor relativo de água e massa seca total. A CEa e a aplicação de AS influenciaram no crescimento e nas alterações fisiológicas das mudas de berinjela. O aumento da CEa reduziu o crescimento na ausência de AS. O dano de membrana com o uso de AS manteve-se estável até 3,9 dS m-1 de CEa. O conteúdo relativo de água independentemente da CEa aumentou com 1 mM de SA. We present an abinitio study of the quasi-2D layered perovskite Sr3Hf2O7 compound, performed within the framework of the density functional theory and lattice dynamics analysis. At high temperatures, this compound takes a I4/mmm centrosymmetric structure (S.G. n. 139); as the temperature is lowered, the symmetry is broken into other intermediate polymorphs before reaching the ground-state structure, which is the Cmc21 ferroelectric phase (S.G. n. 36). One of these intermediate polymorphs is the Ccce structural phase (S.G. n. 68). Additionally, we have probed the C2/c system (S.G n. 15), which was obtained by following the atomic displacements corresponding to the eigenvectors of the imaginary frequency mode localized at the Γ-point of the Ccce phase. By observing the enthalpies at low pressures, we found that the Cmc21 phase is thermodynamically the most stable. Our results show that the I4/mmm and C2/c phases never stabilize in the 0-20 GPa range of pressure values. On the other hand, the Ccce phase becomes energetically more stable at around 17 GPa, surpassing the Cmc21 structure. By considering the effect of entropy and the constant-volume free energies, we observe that the Cmc21 polymorph is energetically the most stable phase at low temperature; however, at 350 K, the Ccce system becomes the most stable. By probing the volume-dependent free energies at 19 GPa, we see that Ccce is always the most stable phase between the two structures and also throughout the studied temperature range. When analyzing the phonon dispersion frequencies, we conclude that the Ccce system becomes dynamically stable only around 19-20 GPa and that the Cmc21 phase is metastable up to 30 GPa.

Background: In patients with established heart failure (HF) low total cholesterol levels associate with worse prognosis. Evidence concerning the impact of Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) in HF is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of LDL-c in patients with HF, both with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed outpatients with chronic HF with systolic dysfunction followed in our HF clinic from January/2012 to May/2018. LDL-c was calculated using the Friedewald's formula. Patients without a complete lipid profile were excluded. The endpoint under analysis was all-cause mortality. Patients were followed until January/2021. A Cox-regression analysis was used to study the prognostic impact of LDL-c. The LDL-c cut-off used was 100 mg/dL (mean value). Analysis was stratified according to the coexistence of DM. Multivariate models were built adjusting for age, sex, coronary artery disease, atherosclerotic non-coronary artery disease, arterial hypertension, smoking status, statin use, severity of systolic dysfunction, creatinine clearance and evidence-based therapy. Results: We studied 522 chronic HF patients, mean age was 70 years, 66.5% males. Severe systolic dysfunction was present in 42.7%, 30.5% had coronary heart disease, 60.5% had arterial hypertension, 41.6% had DM. A total of 92.0% were treated with beta blocker, 87.5% with an ACEi/ARB and 29.1% with a MRA. During a median follow-up of 53 (interquartile range 33-73) months, 235 (45%) patients died. Patients with LDL-c ≤100 mg/dL presented increased multivariate-adjusted risk of all-cause mortality: HR = 1.58 (95% CI: 1.08-2.30), p = 0.02. When patients were stratified according to DM, LDL-c ≤100 mg/dL was independently associated with increased death risk - HR = 1.55 (95% CI:1.05-2.30), p = 0.03 in patients without DM; in patients with DM no association was detected - multivariate-adjusted HR = 1.18 (95% CI: 0.77-1.80), p = 0.44. Conclusion: Non-DM HF patients with LDL-c>100 mg/dL have a 35% reduction in the mortality risk when compared with those with lower values. The "cholesterol paradox" in HF also applies to LDL-c in non-DM patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is characterized by amyloid ß deposition in leptomeningeal and superficial cortical vessels. Cognitive impairment is common and may occur independent of concomitant Alzheimer disease neuropathology. It is still unknown which neuroimaging findings are associated with dementia in cerebral amyloid angiopathy and whether they are modulated by sex. This study compared MR imaging markers in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy with dementia or mild cognitive impairment or who are cognitively unimpaired and explored sex-specific differences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 58 patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy selected from the cerebrovascular and memory outpatient clinics. Clinical characteristics were collected from clinical records. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy was diagnosed on MR imaging on the basis of the Boston criteria. Visual rating scores for atrophy and other imaging features were independently assessed by 2 senior neuroradiologists. RESULTS: Medial temporal lobe atrophy was higher for those with cerebral amyloid angiopathy with dementia versus those cognitively unimpaired (P = .015), but not for those with mild cognitive impairment. This effect was mainly driven by higher atrophy in men with dementia, compared with women with and without dementia (P = .034, P = .012; respectively) and with men without dementia (P = .012). Enlarged perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale were more frequent in women with dementia versus men with and without dementia (P = .021, P = .011; respectively) and women without dementia (P = .011). CONCLUSIONS: Medial temporal lobe atrophy was more prominent in men with dementia, whereas women showed a higher number of enlarged perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale. Overall, this finding suggests differential pathophysiologic mechanisms with sex-specific neuroimaging patterns in cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Sugarcane cultivation stands out in Brazilian agribusiness, covering more than eight million hectares for the production of sugar, ethanol, and by-products. Fertilization is one of the limiting factors in sugarcane yield, for which filter cake is a viable solution to meet plant nutritional needs. This study aimed to assess the effect of enriched filter cake on gas exchange and yield in RB041443 sugarcane, cultivated in soils of the coastal tablelands of Paraíba, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the Monte Alegre S/A sugarcane mill, in the municipality of Mamanguape, using a randomized blocks experimental design, with 12 treatments (T1- cake, T2- cake + MAP, T3- cake + gypsum, T4 - cake + phosphate, T5- cake + bagasse, T6- cake + MAP + gypsum, T7- cake + MAP + phosphate, T8- cake + MAP + bagasse, T9- cake + gypsum + phosphate, T10- cake + gypsum + bagasse, T11- cake + phosphate + bagasse, and T12- control (only MAP)), and 4 replications, totaling 48 plots. A significant effect (5% probability) was also observed for the variables number of leaves and tons of stem per hectare (TSH). T1- cake, T4- cake + phosphate, T6- cake + MAP + gypsum and T10- cake + gypsum + bagasse, had the best results for TSH, with yields greater than 140 t ha-1. Regarding stomatal conductance, the highest values were obtained in T6 and T8, which, together with T11, had the highest gs values. Concerning the internal carbon concentration, T1, T2, T6, and T8 stood out. T6 also had a significant effect on transpiration. From this study, it was concluded that the use of enriched filter cake as a base fertilizer in sugarcane culture contributes to increasing the yield of the RB041443 variety, generating positive responses for plant gas exchange, being T1 and T10 indicated to increase the production in the sugar-energy sector.

Thermomagnetic properties, and its effects on Fisher information entropy with Schioberg plus Manning-Rosen potential are studied using NUFA and SUSYQM methods in the presence of the Greene-Aldrich approximation scheme to the centrifugal term. The wave function obtained was used to study Fisher information both in position and momentum spaces for different quantum states by the gamma function and digamma polynomials. The energy equation obtained in a closed form was used to deduce numerical energy spectra, partition function, and other thermomagnetic properties. The results show that with an application of AB and magnetic fields, the numerical energy eigenvalues for different magnetic quantum spins decrease as the quantum state increases and completely removes the degeneracy of the energy spectra. Also, the numerical computation of Fisher information satisfies Fisher information inequality products, indicating that the particles are more localized in the presence of external fields than in their absence, and the trend shows complete localization of quantum mechanical particles in all quantum states. Our potential reduces to Schioberg and Manning-Rosen potentials as special cases. Our potential reduces to Schioberg and Manning-Rosen potentials as special cases. Four new species of the genus Niveomyces are described from Thailand. They were found as mycoparasites on: Ophiocordyceps infecting flies (Diptera) for Niveomyces albus; ants (Hymenoptera) for N. formicidarum; and leafhoppers (Hemiptera) for N. hirsutellae and N. multisynnematus. A new genus, Pseudoniveomyces with two species: Pseudoniveo. blattae (type species), parasitic on Ophiocordyceps infecting cockroaches, and Pseudoniveo. arachnovorum, found on a spider egg sac, are also described. These fungi share a common feature which is a sporothrix-like asexual morph. Based on our molecular data, Sporothrix insectorum is shown to be affiliated to the genus Niveomyces, and thus a new combination N. insectorum comb. nov. is proposed. Niveomyces coronatus, N. formicidarum and N. insectorum formed the N. coronatus species complex found on ant-pathogenic Ophiocordyceps from different continents. Pseudoniveomyces species are distinguished from Niveomyces spp. based on the presence of fusoid macroconidia in culture and a red pigment diffused in the medium, resembling to Gibellula and Hevansia. The molecular phylogenetic analyses also confirmed its generic status. The host/substrates associated with the genera within Cordycipitaceae were mapped onto the phylogeny to demonstrate that mycoparasitism also evolved independently multiple times in this family. This study explored the demand for improved farm animal welfare (FAW) legislation in the BRIC countries and the USA. Results are discussed in comparison to Europe. Interviewees ranked their willingness to support or oppose introduction of more FAW-friendly laws in their country. A multinomial logistic regression was fit to the data (p < 0.001), with the parameters "country × gender" (p < 0.001) and "country × age" (p < 0.001) found significant. Americans, Russian women, and older Brazilian men are very supportive. The age effect is also felt in India, where older people are more supportive. Chinese, American men, and younger Indians are less supportive. Russian males are the group that oppose the most, followed by younger Brazilians and Indians. The law and its application vary a lot between countries. Nevertheless, the societal willingness to improve FAW legislation is high in all countries. The willingness is higher in Europe. The different cultural backgrounds, the socio-economic factors, and the social, economic, and environmental sustainability are enough reasons to create barriers to policy harmonization in the global trade of farm animal products.

The energy equation and its corresponding normalised radial wave function were fully obtained. The proposed potential reduces to other useful potentials like Rosen-Morse, Hellmann, Yukawa and Coulomb potential as special cases. The thermodynamic properties like the vibrational mean energy ( U ß , V ), Vibrational heat capacity ( C ß , V ), vibrational entropy ( S ß , V ) and vibrational free energy ( F ß , V ) of the interacting potential were studied via partition function ( Z ß , V ) obtained from the resulting energy equation. This study was applied to three diatomic molecules: Chromium hydride (CrH), Titanium Hydride (TiH) and Thiocynate (ScN). To ascertain the high degree of our analytical mathematical accuracy, we compared the results of special cases with an existing results. These were found to be in excellent agreement with the existing results.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been widely investigated in Europe, Asia and North America regarding the occurrence and fate of antibiotic resistance (AR) elements, such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria and pathogens. However, monitoring data about AR elements in municipal WWTPs in Brazil are scarce. This study investigated the abundance of intI1, five ARGs (sul1, tetA, blaTEM, ermB and qnrB) and 16S rRNA in raw and treated wastewater of three WWTPs, using different sewage treatments named CAS (Conventional activated sludge), UASB/BTF (UASB followed by biological trickling filter) and MAS/UV (modified activated sludge with UV disinfection stage). Bacterial diversity and the presence of potentially pathogenic groups were also evaluated, and associations between genetic markers and the bacterial populations were presented. All WWTPs decreased the loads of genetic markers finally discharged to receiving water bodies and showed no evidence of being hotspots for antimicrobial resistance amplification in wastewater, since the abundances of intI1 and ARGs within the bacterial population were not increased in the treated effluents. UASB/BTF showed a similar performance to that of the CAS and MAS/UV, reinforcing the sanitary and environmental advantages of this biological treatment, widely applied for wastewater treatment in warm climate regions. Bacterial diversity and richness increased after treatments, and bacterial communities in wastewater samples differed due to catchment areas and treatment typologies. Potential pathogenic population underwent considerable decrease after the treatments; however, strong significant correlations with intI1 and ARGs revealed potential multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria (Aeromonas, Arcobacter, Enterobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, Stenotrophomonas and Streptococcus) in the treated effluents, although in reduced relative abundances. These are contributive results for understanding the fate of ARGs, MGEs and potential pathogenic bacteria after wastewater treatments, which might support actions to mitigate their release into Brazilian aquatic environments in the near future.

Gullies are a major threat to ecosystems, potentially leading to land degradation, groundwater depletion, crop loss, debris flow, and desertification. Gullies are also characterized by having a fast development and turning into primary sediment sources. Despite their impact, we have but scarce understanding of how gully erosion evolves and how to model it. In this paper, we propose a new gully erosion model that is based on the classical premise of net shear stress, i.e., hydraulic shear stress minus critical (resistant) shear stress, to calculate detachment rates. In order to calculate hydraulic shear stress, we developed a new equation derived from the principle of minimum cross-entropy; it was validated with laboratory measures from the literature with a Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency of 0.95. Soil samples were analysed in the laboratory to assess critical shear stress and other soil properties. The novel gully erosion model was implemented in three gully impacted locations with catchment areas ranging from 10-2 to 10+1 ha. To assess channel geometry and eroded volumes, we used Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Structure-from-Motion technique. The model successfully estimated long-term erosion rates, its efficiency was 0.77, and it is recommended for catchments up to 8 ha. Therefore, the new model provides planners and stakeholders with a tool to assess gully erosion, sediment yield and geometry in most areas.

Triphenylboroxine (TPB) has chemical properties of great interest in organic synthesis, enabling the development of promising molecular architectures. Based on the possibility of the geometric arrangement of N-coordinated boron atoms, the dynamic interconversion ability of boroxine cages enables the optimization of relevant pharmacological properties in drug delivery, such as guest recognition and porosity. In addition, the synthesis of a novel 2D boroxine framework showed distinctive electronic and morphological properties that can be used in the design of new electronic devices. In the present study, the electron-driven fragmentation pathways from electron interactions with TPB using a gas-phase crossed-beam experiment have been investigated. The abundance of the molecular parent cation in the mass spectrum at 70 eV reflects the stability of TPB. The appearance energies of three fragment cations were reported, and the experimental first ionization potential was found at 9.12 ± 0.10 eV. Only the parent cation is formed in the energy range (∼9-16 eV) between the first ionization potential and the remaining thresholds. Regarding negative ion formation, four low-abundant anions in the electron energy range of 0-15 eV are discussed. These results indicate an interesting energy selectivity and stability of TPB upon electron interaction, which may justify the development of recent molecular architectures containing TPB used in a wide range of applications. These results are supported by quantum chemical calculations based on bound state techniques, electron ionization models and thermodynamic thresholds.

Under salt stress conditions, plant growth is reduced due to osmotic, nutritional and oxidative imbalance. However, salicylic acid acts in the mitigation of this abiotic stress by promoting an increase in growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, synthesis of osmoregulators and antioxidant enzymes. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid doses on the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the treatments were distributed in randomized blocks using a central composite matrix Box with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (CEw) (0.50; 1.08; 2.50; 3.92 and 4.50 dS m-1), associated with five doses of salicylic acid (SA) (0.00; 0.22; 0.75; 1.28 and 1.50 mM), with four repetitions and each plot composed of three plants. At 40 days after sowing, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, electrolyte leakage, relative water content, and total dry mass were determined. ECw and SA application influenced the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings. Increasing the ECw reduced growth in the absence of SA. Membrane damage with the use of SA remained stable up to 3.9 dS m-1 of ECw. The relative water content independent of the CEw increased with 1.0 mM of SA. The use of SA at the concentration of 1.0 mM mitigated the deleterious effect of salinity on seedling growth up to 2.50 dS m-1 of ECw.

In the last decades, mega-diverse rivers worldwide (e.g., the Amazon and their tributaries) have experienced several human-driven transformations, although impact assessments oftentimes lack baseline data or reference values to better estimate observed disturbances. Herein, we assessed THg and δ15N in fish muscle tissue to determine biomagnification processes, also including seasonal assessments, concerning Hg in fish from the Belo Monte reservoir, located on the Xingu River, prior to its impoundment. A total of 312 samples from 19 fish species belonging to distinct feeding guilds were sampled. None presented THg concentrations above the threshold levels of 0.5 µg g-1 established by the World Health Organization. However, biomagnification was observed (R = 0.8; p < 0.001), also confirmed by a trophic magnification factor of 1.76 for the entire food web. The THg content in the water was less than 0.001 mg L-1 and only Hemiodus unimaculatus presented seasonal variations for THg. Therefore, at the time of this study, the Xingu River presented low Hg contamination levels in both water and target fish.

INTRODUCTION: Facial palsy (FP) is one of the most common neuropathies. Overall, 15%-30% of patients develop chronic sequelae. Several studies support the use of botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) in the treatment of FP sequelae. No studies have analyzed the cost of treating FP with BoNT-A. METHODS: A retrospective review of data from all clinical records of consultations and procedures that took place at the FP Treatment Unit clinic throughout 2017. Type of BoNT-A used, total dose used, unilateral or bilateral injection, date of consultation, and gender were collected. The price of expendable materials, BoNT-A, and the 2017 salary scale was obtained to establish costs. RESULTS: During 2017, 605 clinical procedures were conducted in 240 patients. The mean number of procedures was 2.5 (0.80). The average time between procedures was 124(28.72) days. The total annual cost was 34.155,10€. The average annual cost of BoNT-A for each procedure was 39,93€, and the total annual cost of BoNT-A was 24.160,58€. On average, more units of IncotoxA were injected. This difference is not reflected in the final cost of each BoNT-A. For patients who achieved treatment stability, the average annual cost per patient was 106,6€ (OnatoxA) and 100,6€ (IncotoxA). CONCLUSION: In our unit, treatment with BoNT-A in FP sequelae had an average annual cost of 124,31€ per patient, requiring a visit to the hospital to receive treatment every 124 days. Given the functional and quality of life improvements, we should consider that it is a beneficial treatment at an acceptable cost.

During surveys in central Florida of the zombie-ant fungus Ophiocordyceps camponoti-floridani, which manipulates the behavior of the carpenter ant Camponotus floridanus, two distinct fungal morphotypes were discovered associated with and purportedly parasitic on O. camponoti-floridani. Based on a combination of unique morphology, ecology and phylogenetic placement, we discovered that these morphotypes comprise two novel lineages of fungi. Here, we propose two new genera, Niveomyces and Torrubiellomyces, each including a single species within the families Cordycipitaceae and Ophiocordycipitaceae, respectively. We generated de novo draft genomes for both new species and performed morphological and multi-loci phylogenetic analyses. The macromorphology and incidence of both new species, Niveomyces coronatus and Torrubiellomyces zombiae, suggest that these fungi are mycoparasites since their growth is observed exclusively on O. camponoti-floridani mycelium, stalks and ascomata, causing evident degradation of their fungal hosts. This work provides a starting point for more studies into fungal interactions between mycopathogens and entomopathogens, which have the potential to contribute towards efforts to battle the global rise of plant and animal mycoses.
